Three Simple Rules of Preventive Dentistry

Dr. Mafi wants you to achieve optimum dental health - essential for your overall health and wellbeing. By following these three rules you can facilitate your own wellness, naturally.
Rule 1: Brush (which you probably do.)
Rule 2: Floss (a habit that is easy to start.)
Rule 3: Make Regular Visits to Your Dentist in San Diego (before Mr. Cavity visits you.)

Tips to Brush & Floss Properly:

  • Dr. Mafi does not recommend fluoridated toothpastes, nor does she use fluoride in her San Diego dentist office.
  • Use a soft toothbrush. Do not press the toothbrush into your gums or teeth.
  • Take your time and brush in a circular path along each tooth.
  • After brushing, use dental floss to clean your gums and the tight areas between your teeth where a brush will not reach.
  • Dr. Mafi recommends the use of an electric toothbrush.
Achieve Optimum Health
Visiting your dentist in San Diego regularly, at least every 6 months, is an essential part of Preventive Dentistry. Diet also factors into achieving optimum dental health. The preventive approach to dentistry at home would include avoiding candy and other sweets and brushing your teeth immediately after eating. Smoking and drinking too much coffee are added reasons to visit Dr. Mafi regularly for checkups and cleaning.

Remember, your mouth is part of your body. Lacking proper oral hygiene can affect your overall health – including the health of your heart. The U.S. government’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have made several studies concluding that tooth loss and periodontal disease may increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.
